Introduction

People must not have agreed with the State’s mandate of keeping records in the 1852-1854 time period, as very few deaths were recorded, but we have transcribed what is available for Butler County here.  Many years ago, all the counties of PA were asked to send these old records to the State.  They are now held in the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg, PA.  The title of these early records is RG26, and the Secretary of Commonwealth Vital Statistics, Department of State is in charge of them.

The 1893-1905 records were transcribed from the original ledger books which are located in the Butler County Courthouse.  They have been transcribed, complete with  errors, so that they are as close to being a duplication of the originals as possible.  As with any work of this nature, different people can read the handwriting in slightly different ways and this is merely our interpretation. Due to size constraints, we did have to abbreviate some columns of information, but we did not delete any information.

We hope that you find this information helpful in your research.
